Our latest modular project in Bozeman, Montana, is a perfect example of why modular can be the right choice, depending on where and how you want to live. This tiny home was built for the Ericsons, who had a very clear vision from the start.

A Tiny Home Designed for Family, Privacy, and Place

The Ericsons wanted a tiny home to serve as a guest house (accessory dwelling unit / ADU) on their ranch property. A place where their adult children could come home and have privacy. A space to host friends—somewhere people could truly rest for a while.

Just as important, the home needed to feel like it belonged on the land. It had to complement the main house already on the property and sit naturally within the surrounding landscape. As you’ll quickly see, windows were essential in this design—capturing the stunning views, bringing the outdoors in, and making a small space feel expansive.

We were honored to be chosen as their builder and to help bring this vision to life.

The First (and Most Important) Step: Zoning & Bylaws

Before design details, finishes, or floor plans come into play, there is one critical step that determines everything: What do your local zoning and bylaws allow?

In Bozeman, MT, a tiny home on wheels—classified as a certified RV or Park Model RV—does not qualify as an ADU. A modular home does.

That distinction alone can make or break a project, which is why we always encourage clients to start with research and conversations at the county level before falling in love with a Fritz Tiny Home.

Why Modular Works Where Wheels Can’t

Modular homes (also referred to as prefabricated homes) are:

• Engineered to meet local building codes

• Placed on a permanent, engineered foundation

• Inspected during construction in a controlled facility

Many jurisdictions—especially when it comes to ADUs—require a permanent foundation for permitting and a home that meets local building code. In this case, a modular home solves a problem that an on-wheels home simply can’t in Bozeman. But it all comes down to county bylaw (for example, in LA, a tiny house on wheels can qualify as an ADU)

Bringing This Modular ADU to Life

To bring this project together, we worked closely with the Ericsons, a structural engineer, and Bozeman’s Modular Program. We prepared the required drawings and documentation for county submission and approval.

Once approvals were in place, we began building the home in our facility in Devon, Alberta, Canada, where it was fully constructed, inspected, and furnished. We can deliver a truly turnkey home, right down to the blinds and mattresses. Our modular homes come complete and move-in ready, with very little site work required after placement.

While the home was being built, the Ericsons—working with a local general contractor—prepared the engineered foundation and brought power, water, and sewer services to the site. Once complete, the home was craned onto a truck and transported to Montana by our experienced logistics team. We handled all cross-border brokerage and paperwork, making the process of purchasing a Canadian-built modular home seamless. Upon arrival, a crane set the home onto its permanent foundation, the 2 pieces of the home were married together, and the home was secured and connected to services.

Fritz Tiny Homes was recently featured on a YouTube channel with a full video tour of our Halcyon 02 model, beautifully personalized and now fully lived in by our client, Rochelle, in Biddeford, ME. Watching this video feels like a full-circle moment for our entire team.

In the video, Rochelle doesn’t just point out design features. She shares why she chose to go tiny, how she navigated permitting, and what the collaboration process was like as we tailored the Halcyon 02 to fit her life—not the other way around.

And honestly, that’s the part that means the most to us.

We spend a lot of time designing layouts, refining details, and solving practical challenges, but seeing a home once it’s settled into its place, styled with personal touches, and woven into someone’s daily rhythm is something else entirely. From the way Rochelle has made the space her own, to how it supports life with her daughter, it’s clear this home is doing what it was meant to do.

The Halcyon 02 is a refined, two-bedroom tiny home on wheels, designed to balance beauty with function. In Rochelle’s case, that meant adding a skylight to her daughter’s bedroom, customizing finishes in the primary suite, and making thoughtful design choices that support how she actually lives day to day. This tour captures what we aim for with every build: a home that enables freedom, simplicity, and intention… without giving up comfort or good design!

We are incredibly grateful for our business: for the beautiful work that challenges and inspires us daily, for the clients we have the privilege of meeting, and for our team, who believe in our dream as if it were their own and execute it with care and precision. As we reflect on all that 2025 held, we’re also looking ahead to 2026 with excitement and anticipation.

In no particular order, here are the Fritz Tiny Homes Top 10 moments of 2025.

1. California Mountaintop Tiny Home
I will never forget watching our tiny home crest a rugged mountaintop. This project meant so much to us for many reasons. It proved that we can truly place homes where our clients dream of living. We hired an off-road towing company to haul the home inch by inch to the site. It was the most challenging install to date, and now we can proudly say we have an off-grid tiny home perched on a mountaintop overlooking the ocean in California.

2. Halcyon Grand Launch
We launched a brand-new tiny home on wheels model, our largest to date. The Halcyon Grand is a 400-square-foot park model designed for clients looking for more. We listened closely to what our clients wanted: a king-size primary suite with storage, two private bedrooms, a dining table for four, a full front-hall closet, and a bathroom with tall ceilings and space for a washer and dryer. We are proud of the functionality of this home. The first was shipped to Illinois, and another is headed to Washington this spring.

3. Halcyon Lux Builds
We revisited our Halcyon Lux model and built two side by side, one for Ontario and one for Washington. This model is always a joy to build. The woodwork showcases the craftsmanship and heart that go into each home, and the bathroom remains a true showstopper.

4. Vancouver Island Delivery & Family Adventure
We delivered a Halcyon 02 to Vancouver Island for a dear client and brought our families along. We love having our kids involved so they can see our work firsthand—the boys even helped unpack the home. This delivery flowed straight into a summer adventure: camping at Lake Cowichan, visiting Bamfield, surfing in Tofino, and reconnecting with friends on Texada Island. These are core family memories we will treasure forever.

5. Colorado… Twice
We travelled to Colorado twice this year: once to help a client remove a tiny home from a mountainside in Crested Butte, and again to install a home in Pagosa Springs. Both locations were challenging and reinforced what our homes are capable of. Crested Butte saw 48 feet of snow at 11,000 feet, and with our building systems and in-floor heating, the home handled it beautifully. Rugged, breathtaking, and demanding, Colorado keeps us on our toes.

6. First Modular Tiny Home in Bozeman, Montana

We completed our first modular tiny home project in Bozeman and travelled to see it firsthand. This stunning guest house sits on ranch land, and we couldn’t be prouder of the design or our clients. While tiny homes on wheels are a great solution, zoning and bylaws don’t always allow them. To make our homes more accessible across North America, we launched the modular side of Fritz. These homes are engineered for permanent foundations, meet local building codes, and are fully permitted through provincial or state modular programs. They are an efficient solution for both primary and secondary dwellings, with more to come in 2026.

7. Launching the Fritz Sauna Division

We officially launched our sauna division, something that has been a personal and professional dream for years. Our goal was to create a sauna line that reflects the luxury, craftsmanship, and design Fritz is known for. After extensive research and development, it is here. Two modern glass saunas are now at a health and wellness retreat in San Diego, a solid wood sauna sits in our own backyard, and another was installed for the Grand Prize Showhome in the Full House Lottery in Edmonton. We are loving the practice and ritual of sauna as a family for its health benefits and the connection it brings when unplugged.

8. Florida, Family, and Gratitude
We had the opportunity to travel to Florida with our families and reconnect with our clients in Naples and Sanibel Island. It was a joy to see these tiny homes a year after installation and how our clients have made them their own. We were deeply humbled by an unexpected gift: a surprise day at Disney World. There were tears, smiles, and memories we will carry forever! The kindness and generosity we experienced on this trip reminded us how special the relationships behind these homes truly are.

This year marked five years of Fritz Tiny Homes. From a single tiny home built in our backyard under a tarp shed to what this business has become, it’s incredible to reflect. It is a testament to belief and courage, resilience and grit, surrounding yourself with good people and community, and learning how to pivot and weather the storms. Business isn’t always easy. We could easily list our hardest lessons and biggest challenges, but building a life and business you love is always worth it.

Why Do Our Clients Want Tiny Homes?

Our clients have had such incredible reasons for wanting a tiny home. Here are a handful of ways that tiny homes created solutions for our clients:

Where Do You Build & Deliver Your Tiny Homes?

We design and build our product with our team in Devon, AB, Canada. We have a small team of 16 people with a focus on craftsmanship, integrity, and design. We deliver our tiny homes all over - from coast to coast - across North America! Our commitment to building science and creating resilient tiny homes means our product can be located in wide-ranging climates:

• The side of a rainy mountain range in the Pacific Northwest

• On a tropical island in Sanibel, Florida

• On a mountain top overlooking the ocean in California

• East Coast Maine

• In remote Northern Alberta (entirely self-sustaining and off-grid!)

• By a creek in British Columbia, Canada

Our product is USMCA-compliant, and it currently crosses the US border duty-free and tariff-free. We take care of the brokerage and paperwork to make purchasing a tiny home and exporting it to the USA smooth and easy. Delivery is quite affordable, based on a per-km/mile rate depending on the size of your home. I can get clients a delivery quote within minutes.

On-Wheels vs Off-Wheels

We build 2 different types of tiny homes! Homes on wheels and homes not on wheels. Tiny homes on wheels are a certified RV (8.5’ wide) or Park Model RV (10.5 wide). Homes not on wheels are called Prefabricated/Modular and are engineered to meet local building codes for placement on an engineered permanent foundation.  We have certification and inspection programs for both Canada and the USA on all of our products.

There are benefits to having a tiny home on wheels (RV):

1. You can move your home from one location to another. For example, we had a client replace their tiny home that served as their summer getaway with a larger home, and they moved their original tiny home to their property to be a short-term rental. 

2. You can also put a tiny home on-wheels in places that you maybe can’t if you need a full foundation, like the side of a mountain or in remote or hard to access areas on property. 

3. There is a lower environmental impact with a tiny home on wheels as it does not require a full engineered foundation for home placement. Set up can be as simple as hard, solid ground with crush gravel laid down for good drainage and RV style hook up. 30/50/100 amp service, garden hose water, propane, and an RV sewer line. We can provide a blocking kit for the home to sit on and a skirting to complete the set up.

There are different benefits to tiny homes off-wheels - Prefabricated/Modular Homes.

1. Modular homes are engineered to meet local building codes and to be placed on an engineered foundation permanently. There are many places where you can’t get a permit unless there is a foundation. A modular home solves this problem for locations resistant to on-wheels homes. 

2. Modular homes give you more flexibility for space. For example, we have a modular floor plan that is multi-story and can expand up to 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms! 

3. Modular homes can qualify under traditional mortgages, so they tend to be easier to finance - more info on this below.

4. Modular homes often save time and money compared to traditional stick-built, onsite construction. The home is fully constructed and inspected in our facility. The construction, noise, and mess happen off-site, and not in your backyard! There are no weather-related delays and costs. All trades working on your home are under one roof in our facility; there is efficiency and control in the process. This can prevent budget and schedule overages. 

The reality is that the house you pick depends on where and how you want to live and the zoning and bylaws in your area! We suggest a call to the county FIRST to find out what the restrictions are, to determine if wheels or modular is better for you. This upfront work is the most challenging part of the process. Once you work your way through restrictions and limits based on location, then you get to dive into the fun stuff!

Here are the questions I would suggest you start with:

1. Is the land zoned for an RV or Park Model RV? 

2. Can you put a prefabricated/modular home on your property? 

3. Are there any minimum/maximum square foot requirements for the primary or secondary dwelling? 

4. Are there any architectural controls you should be aware of?

Once we know the answers to these questions, we can help guide you through our product line to find the tiny home that suits your land and the life you want to lead!

How do you Finance Your Tiny Home?

Tiny homes are not always exactly like regular homes when it comes to financing.  For modular homes, you can generally access a standard mortgage through your bank as the home is affixed to the land.

Tiny homes on wheels are RVs and therefore fall under RV-style financing. In Canada, we have a contact for RV financing to help finance homes on wheels. In the USA I do not have a contact yet. Often, our clients are using Home Owner’s Lines of Credit, personal loans, pulling investments, or making a cash sale from the sale of a previous property. 

How long is the process of working with Fritz?

Typically, we are working 6-9 months out from the point of initial contact to having a home ready for delivery. 

What is the next step?

1. I recommend first exploring our website and the different models we have to offer. Take a peek at the floor plans, watch the full YouTube video tours. This will help you understand our product, the craftsmanship, design, thought, and care that go into each model. You will also find the starting cost and what’s included. 

2. Understand what you are legally allowed to place on your land or potential parking spot. This will involve some research and or a call to your county to know what you are zoned for.

• Privacy – we designed a 2-bedroom tiny home where both the master bedroom and the loft bedroom can be fully closed off for privacy. But as always, to keep things open and livable, we have huge windows and even added a sliding patio door onto the covered deck. The king master suite is stunning.

• Storage, storage, storage – Our tiny homes have maximized storage, and this model has even more! The master suite has storage integrated into the bed as well as a full wall wardrobe. There is a full front hall closet, a kitchen packed with storage and ample bathroom storage.

• Dining Room Table – With room for more people to sleep and live, more room is needed for food prep, dining and connection. We loved designing a table for 4 with integrated storage underneath.  

• Full Kitchen & Oversized Bathroom – This kitchen is great to cook in, and our bathroom has 6’10” ceilings! (Inspired by our first Halcyon Grand client who is 6’7”!) The bathroom feels so luxurious and comes standard with a soaker tub, or can be upgraded to a custom concrete and glass walk-in shower.

• Washer and Dryer - this tiny home comes standard with a washer/dryer combo but has room for a full side-by-side washer and dryer!

I have to say, this was probably one of our top tiny home experiences since starting Fritz Tiny Homes. While the home itself is so beautiful, it was memorable because it was the perfect example of limitless dreaming. This property is so remote, totally off-grid, and utterly peaceful and secluded. It was no small feat to get this tiny home delivered and we had to engage the help of an off-road salvage crew to get it up to the top of the mountain. There were challenges along the way but we got it up to site. It was such a victory.

Our client had a dream, and we partnered up to say - let’s make it a reality. If you can dream it…we can work together to make it happen!

This specific tiny home had some really wonderful features:

• A new exterior color that gave the tiny home the look of corten steel! This color was so complimentary of the California mountain landscape. We were really mindful of the challenges and risks of California forest fire season so we took steps to further ember/fireproof this tiny home.

• We personalized a custom electric murphy bed. The bed transforms into a desk during the day to maximize space and utility.

• The bathroom has an elegant walk-in glass shower, surrounded by windows, for a remote mountain spa experience.

• The couch! People are always asking us about our couches, and I’m going to tell you our little secret. We often take beautiful stock sofas and customize them. In this case, we removed the legs and added a custom white oak trundle bed beneath. 

• This tiny home features a new fireplace design! The horizontal orientation features native rocks and LED-mist lights. Definitely check this one out!

• This tiny home is incredibly remote and fully off-grid.

Design is so important when it comes to building a tiny home. Small spaces have to be designed SMART. Everything must be multi-purpose and flexible. It’s a bed, but it’s also a desk. It’s a closet, but it’s also a laundry room. It’s beautiful but it’s also efficient. There’s no room for wasted space, so every little detail is considered and designed to be maximized. This is our favorite challenge to forever be solving.

Last month we sent two separate tiny homes to sunny Florida! Both these homes were so special and the timing was so serendipitous that while we were there installing one home on Sanibel island, the second tiny home arrived for our clients in Naples, and we were able to travel to see and walk our clients through their new home too! It’s just crazy to think that 2 tiny homes went from little Devon, Alberta, all the way across the continent to Florida! 

I want to share with you a little bit about each of these tiny homes and what makes them unique, but before I do, there are 2 key lessons that came out of our Florida trip:

1. When we say our commitment to building science is so high so we can build for all climates, many people jump to the idea of us building for freezing Canadian winters. And this is true. We have tiny homes located in remote locations deep in the wilderness, or on the sides of mountains, that deal with snow, ice and long frozen winters. But we build for so much more than that. An equal amount of care goes into building for tropical climates. These tiny homes in Florida were designed to hold their own, the best that can possibly be expected, in the face of hurricanes and tropical storms. That means accommodations such as hurricane grade windows, hurricane tie-downs, and raising the build to keep them dry. Everything we can do to mitigate storm damage…we do. The big reminder in this for us is just that – if you can dream it, we can build it. Whether your dream life, land, or location is tropical, wintery, mountainous, full of rain, desert dry…there are no limits.

2. The people, the people, the people. The incredible people we come into contact with, our clients, colleagues, and team members, make everything we do worthwhile. This is the real treasure for us. I will share more in future blog posts, but we were absolutely privileged to spend time with our clients in Florida. They are wonderful humans and we were so touched by their stories, warmth, and hospitality. We left inspired by people who are following their dreams and living intentionally. This is also why we build at the rhythm we do. We are not a giant manufacturer, pumping houses out as fast as we can. Sanibel Island

The first Florida tiny home was delivered to beautiful Sanibel Island. We personalized a Halcyon 01 design for our amazing client. Some of the features of this house include:

• To mitigate for tropical weather challenges, we raised this tiny home up by 4’, giving it a very cool “mini-skyscraper” look.

• This client chose to keep the standard in-floor heating, in case this tiny home ends up in a different climate at some point, but also added in AC.

• On top of beautiful single piece concrete countertops and a spa-like bathroom, the entire tiny home has dimmable, programmable, wireless lighting for sleek design and versatility.

• A beautiful couch designed with custom storage drawers.

Naples

Our clients in Naples purchased a tiny home as their retirement home. They wanted a place of peace and rest and decided on a beautifully designed Halcyon Stay. It was an absolute honor to walk them through their new home and launch them into this precious new chapter of their lives. Check out this short youtube clip to see more on our Naples tiny home.

There we have it! We have delivered tiny homes to the side of a mountain in Colorado. We’ve seen a tiny home heading to Alaska on a barge. We’ve watched a tiny home be installed in downtown LA by crane. And now we have a tiny home on a tropical island. So cool. We are so honored and excited about all 2025 holds for Fritz Tiny Homes.

New Year's makes me deeply reflective, both looking back on the year behind, and looking forward with hope and excitement for what’s to come. 

2024 was quite a year. I am so grateful for the incredible adventures, the amazing people we have met, the loveliest clients, and the Fritz Tiny Homes team who were at the heart of everything that 2024 brought us. 

In no particular order, here are the Fritz Tiny Homes top 10 moments of 2024.

Los Angeles Tiny Home – I will never forget what it felt like to watch our tiny home being CRANED into a lot in a busy urban neighborhood in LA. This tiny home meant so much to us for so many reasons, but it also showed us how much the tiny home movement can help solve housing challenges and that there is real momentum in our community. This year, our home was even featured in Dwell Magazine - check it out here!

Palo Alto Halcyon Stay – In 2024, our Halcyon Stay went from concept to top seller! This model was built from Kev’s vision for the ultimate vacation guest house. The response from our clients has exceeded our expectations and we are now building many of this model.

Washington Halcyon 02 – We delivered and installed a Halcyon 02 on the side of a mountain in Washington (literally!). This tiny home was such a lesson for us that if you dream it, we can help you make it happen. This was the toughest terrain in a very remote area, and we all felt like nothing could stop us. Our tiny homes are so well built and primed for all climates. We took our kids along on this trip, which is always such a joy. The boys were in there, helping get the house installed and it felt like such a blessing to have them see what we do and participate in it.

Alberta Award of Distinction – It was an immense honor to win the Global Growth Award from Alberta Awards of Distinction. The majority of our tiny homes head to the US and we are so grateful for our global growing clientele. It’s humbling to see our team grow and to know we are part of a movement not just of tiny home living, but in living intentionally and helping people live out their dreams. Refuge Bay – This eco-tourism resort is a project near and dear to our hearts. It has brought us a ton of joy to bring our client’s vision to live. This luxury vacation getaway tiny home is entirely off-grid, and we customized it for sleeping under the stars. The roof and walls are all glass and the custom bed rolls out to sleep right under the glass ceiling. It’s so beautifully designed and was proof for us that our tiny homes can successfully be located in very remote places without power.

The Fritz – Our very first tiny home, The Fritz, was sold and sent to its new home in Alaska. It was wild to see a tiny home on top of a big barge full of sea cans. But seriously, Florida to Alaska, the resiliency of our building science is our top priority, so that our clients are not limited in how big they can dream about a tiny home.

Family Adventure to Sunshine Coast – We set out to Northern BC this summer to help some clients who had found their dream property. We took the kids and spent time camping and adventuring as a family. This was the first year that all 6 of us could keep up and have fun doing activities such as surfing and mountain biking. It was precious time together, a pace reset, and so much fun.

Halcyon Studio – We released a new model this year! As we grow, we learn more and more about what our clients need and what they’re looking for. This model was built directly out of people asking us for flexible spaces that can be used as studios, offices, guest houses, and so much more. We saw the first few off to Utah and Washington.

Florida Tiny Homes – We sent 2 tiny homes off to Florida near the end of 2024! This is the farthest we’ve sent our tiny homes. When we say our tiny homes are built for all climates, we mean they can withstand the winters of Northern Canada, as well as the tropical climates of places like Naples, Florida. We had the opportunity to go and see these tiny homes installed from start to finish.

The Team – Our Fritz Tiny Homes team…it’s just hard to find words for how much we love and respect our people. We are so proud of them. The culture at work is incredible and we are so grateful.

I look back on all of this with such gratitude. What a wild ride! The thread through ALL these highlights is the incredible people we have met along the way. It has been an honor to work with our wonderful clients, hear their stories, become their friends, and watch as they follow their dreams. We are so excited for 2025 and all the good ahead. This is such a beautiful time of year. It’s a season of kindness and generosity. It’s a time where we are invited to reset our pace, and choose to make memories with our family in the peaceful cozy time we have in between projects. Most of the year we are go-go-go. With kids and sports and tiny homes and all the busy pieces of life, it’s so important to intentionally set apart time every once in a while, to shift the pace, embrace the calm, and be deeply present.

Where we live in Alberta, Canada, it’s WINTER. It’s cold and snowy and dark this time of year and there’s something about the dark evenings that makes it so nice to cozy up together. Our favorite things to do are to sit by the fire, cuddle up for Christmas movies, pile on a bed to read stories to our kids, play board games by the tree or head out to the community rink and play shinny together!

Our Christmas wish for you is that wherever you are, you will be surrounded by people you love, and that the precious moments of calm and beauty will find you and squeeze their way into your life in some way, every day.

The Fritz Family

 Every family is so beautifully unique. When our clients in Utah reached out to us about building their dream family getaway set up, we were so honored. They live in a bustling city but have rural property they use for camping, riding ATVs and they even have a dome set up for glamping. They wanted to create something more permanent so they could spend their summers making incredible lifelong memories for all the kids in the family. Their story resonates with us so much, because we are trying to do the same with our kids – create lasting memories through intentional time together, in nature.

We personalized 2 Halcyon Studios – one for the adults, one as the ultimate kid bunkhouse. They wanted maximum sleeping space because they live outdoors as much as possible. They have a great set up for outdoor cooking and dining, so the only kitchen amenities we put inside for them is a small fridge. This is a perfect example of how we create models that come with a standard design, while still leaving a ton of room for personalization.

We personalized the kid’s bunkhouse with white oak built-in bunkbeds for lots of sleeping space, as well as a sofa with a trundle bed hiding under it. The beds have built-in reading lights and storage. You can imagine the cousins all piling in together after a day in the sun and an evening under the stars.

The “adult” Halcyon Studio has a murphy bed by EMBED, a ton of storage, enormous windows, and a luxury single-piece concrete shower in the bathroom that is elegantly hidden behind a sliding door. The space is so functional for this family.

The most exciting part of all…these 2 Halcyon Studios are fully off-grid. We built a smaller third building to act as their solar shed and house everything they need to make their set up off-grid and the ultimate in sustainable living.

We both have so many core memories of camping as kids, and we know our kids are building these important memories every year as well. This set up will serve this family for years to come.

This tiny home works just as well in an urban setting as it does as a remote getaway. This tiny home doesn’t need a lot storage, because it’s designed for shorter-term stays. We’ve managed to intentionally include enough storage space to be functional, but have reserved the rest of the space for an open, luxurious, and grand feeling, capitalizing on views and focusing on natural light and huge windows.

You might remember the video of us delivering a Halcyon 02 Tiny Home by CRANE to a backyard in downtown Los Angeles. The logistics were intense: craning what ended up clocking in at a 26,000-lb tiny home, 100 feet above a house on a hillside, near a major intersection, connecting to city utilities, and meeting all the local permitting and guideline requirements. The whole experience blew our minds, and this tiny home is still making waves!

Los Angeles is tackling its housing crisis by creating a clear path forward for tiny homes as Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Our tiny home was one of the first to be approved under this new ordinance. It is so encouraging and hopeful and we are excited to watch other cities follow in their footsteps. Congratulations to LA and to our client, Joysi, who had all the vision for how she could use a tiny home to create a solution. She engaged a team to pull this project off – a crane company, a contractor for site prep, a planning/permitting consultant, and the Fritz team. Thanks to so much learning, we are now primed to help our clients put ADUs on properties all over.

This was such a special trip for us because we got to take our family to a place that I spent significant time at as a kid. Our clients are a wonderful family of 4 who wanted to put a tiny house on some purchased land and build the ultimate family getaway. Our clients recently sent us these gorgeous pictures of how they have established their dream getaway and have started to put roots down in this special place, creating memories with their kids. It got me thinking about how we often talk about tiny home living like just getting the tiny home is the dream to celebrate. And that’s true! But it’s in the living, day by day, that the real dream happens, living life intentionally, according to our values. The years after, when our clients build a life around their tiny home, this should be celebrated too.

These photos also show how impacting it is to have an inspired plan for the exterior of a tiny home. Intentional outdoor living spaces can significantly increase the space and experience of tiny home living. Our clients added beautiful landscaping, turning their space into an absolute oasis. They added in a fire pit, family seating for shared meals, and an oversized deck overlooking their beautiful property.

The most inspiring part of it all is that these lovely clients had planned to build a cottage on this property. But they looked at the time and cost of a big full build and decided that they wanted this family time, this connection with their kids now. Not in a couple of years. We were able to get a tiny home to them much quicker. A year later, what they’ve done with their tiny home is a work of art. Their dreams of connecting as a family, immersed in nature, are reflected in the beautiful space they have created around their tiny home.

We started the summer adventuring to Texada Island, off the Sunshine Coast. Some tiny home clients of ours purchased property there so we headed off for work. We turned this into a family adventure with the 6 of us and Troy’s family too. I am so grateful that work has taken us to so many incredible places and it’s always an extra joy when our families can be part of it, to see, explore, and connect together. Texada Island has so much marine life, cathedral forests, and epic beaches to explore. For prairie people, the ocean time, with kids jumping off docks and being able to explore the wild, was absolutely magical.

Then, the Fritz’s, with all our camping gear, took off for Powell River, Campbell River, and Tofino, BC. Our family is in a special pocket of time where the kids are all able to do the things we love to do as a family. The baby years, with all the strollers and backpacks, are so special. But those years are over and for the first time, everyone was on mountain bikes, everyone surfed, everyone could keep up. To be able to do life together in those ways was so exciting for us as a family. We all got up on surfboards! I’d never done that before.  And was proud to be able to show my kids that it’s never too late to learn and try something new. It was hard, and I could actually do it! What a incredible feeling to ride a wave!

There were definitely lessons along the way. It’s easy to show the highlight reel, and I always will, because I cherish the beautiful moments we create as a family. But these highlights happen because of the hard stuff. I mean, 6 of us spent 14 days in a tent together. It’s not a luxury vacation we’re talking about. The good things in life are worth fighting for. The incredible memory of surfing together was possible because Kev spent an entire day in the cold Pacific Ocean  teaching the kids. The exhilaration of mountain biking happens after every difficult pedal up the mountain. Is it easy? No. Is it worth it? Absolutely.

I had preplanned all our content, so I could stay connected to our clients and community while we were away. When we got to the campsite though, it was way more remote than we imagined. Zero cell service. I had to just let it go. It was a forced unplug. And honestly, it was the best thing ever. For 10 days, I could not access social media, emails, or anything. So this trip offered me an unexpected level of rest I didn’t know I needed. There maybe aren’t a lot of opportunities for us to do something like that, but if you ever have the opportunity to prioritize some digital rest, even for a day, I encourage you to do so. To be so present in our lives with undistracted time, is so valuable. The mind needs rest as much as the body.

We are now home, with a couple of weeks left of summer. These summer life principles don’t need to go disappear as we head into the more routine, busy fall season. I believe we can find the beauty wherever we are, with the people that we’re with. This is the marking of an intentional and meaningful life. The only life we’re interested in living.

The Halcyon Stay we built for Refuge Bay, an eco-tourism resort in Alberta, is one of those special projects. This tiny home is the ultimate getaway house, where guests go to immerse themselves in nature, unplug, recharge, and feel awe and wonder for our beautiful world.

What’s so special about this tiny home? We took our regular Halcyon Stay model, and added a moon room. We put the custom king-size bed on rollers so the bed can roll right into the moon room and guests can sleep under the stars. Pure magic. Not to mention, when this bed is rolled out into the moon room, there is a trundle couch built into the back of the bed that can be set up to watch movies with a projector screen. Intentional and compact design at it’s fullest.

We also designed this tiny home to be fully off grid, which is something that doesn’t happen often in climates that include Canadian winters! When building a house that is entirely self sustaining, we have to consider how we keep the integrity of the system. In the Refuge Bay Halcyon Stay, we included in-floor heating, which is efficient and substantial in a tiny home, and added a solar shed that houses grey water tanks, filters, and other necessities for the compostable toilet.fresh water tanks, solar batteries, propane tanks and other necessities for the composting toilet. The whole project is mind-blowing and really gives a perfect example about how many options open up to you when you choose to live tiny. This tiny home is located on rural land, in a very remote area without service. It is so private and offers that unique experience of being fully immersed in nature, that only off-grid living can provide.

Adding the solar shed and the moon room are great examples of how combining buildings can solve square footage challenges. We have had clients combine buildings for office and studio space, or to add additional guest space for extended families. At Refuge Bay, the additional tiny building (the solar shed), created a solution to allow for off-grid living. There are endless ways this can be done and over the next few months, you will see other incredible projects we are working on with creative clients.
